The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize...

Clairee Belcher, “Steel Magnolias”

Dear Members,

I have always loved that line from “Steel Magnolias” but I really appreciate it after watching “Advanced Style” with all of you at the last meeting. I have to admit I was a little apprehensive that you might not like the change-up meeting, but I am hearing lots of positive feedback. On behalf of the rest of the board, I’d like to thank you for making us feel safe being silly. I wish I had had someone recording me after the meeting. I was wearing 16 year-old thigh-high hose. I know how old they are because I bought them for my stepson’s wedding in 1999. To their credit they lasted 15 years longer than the marriage, but they had apparently deteriorated in the drawer. I felt them slipping a bit during the meeting, but it wasn’t until I was in the middle of the bank parking lot that they gave up the fight and dropped around my ankles. The nice lady that was walking just behind me tried valiantly not to laugh. By the time I got to Baxter’s for lunch I had shed the stockings and heels for Sketchers that were the perfect accessory for a silk dress and mink stole. No one is going to make a fashion documentary about me. If you missed the meeting, you can find out more about these fabulous women at advancedstylefilm.com.

Bizarre Bazaar is just buzzing these days. I got an email this morning from Diane Arrants that we closed Friday with a $900 day. It’s amazing what a team of women can do. For the first time in our history we have over $100,000 to award in grants and scholarships. Grants will be allocating $79,000 and grants $26,500. Both committees are hard at work now reading and making preliminary recommendations. Be sure to come to the May and June meeting to see where the money from your hours of service is going. It is always so inspiring.

Here are some dates you will want to note on your calendar:

May 1     Tickets for the spring luncheon go on sale at BB

May 15    CAL meeting; grants presentation

May 27    Spring Luncheon

June 27   Dog walk fundraiser for local cancer services

It is a glorious day. I have been having a difficult time writing this because so much is going on outside the window to my backyard. A pair of mallards are taking a dip in my drainage creek, a pair of quail are cleaning up under the bird feeder, the swallows are desperately checking the bird houses, the gold finches have returned, and the geese are doing what they do so well - honk and poop. I hope you all get out to take a deep breath this weekend.

Love, Sherry
